Drop Dead Drop Caps

PrintWhat the heck is a drop cap? Drop caps (or initial caps) are illustrated letters that are stylish entry points into text! They open a communication piece with personality and visual impact. Typically you use the first letter of the first word, but I take an exception to that rule and use any letter that suits the spirit of the article!

Drop caps go way back in history—in both Western and Eastern traditions. We associate them with illuminated manuscripts. Remember the Book of Kells? If you find yourself intrigued, there’s a precious animated film called the Secret of Kells that you might enjoy. The drawings are beautiful.

Anyway, with modernist traditions in graphic design, drop caps dropped out of favor in much of the 1900s. With the help of fresh interpretations of young designers such as the magnificent Jessica Hische, many people are falling in love with drop caps (or initial caps) all over again!

When I saw the work of Luiza Lafitte, a young Brazilian designer who lives in France, I contacted her to see if she might be interested in drawing a series of drop caps for lissyparker.com. The rest is history … so today I announce lissyparker.com drop caps by Luiza Lafitte. You’ll see them popping up in weeks to come.
