Fall means cooler temps, stunning leaf colors, sweaters, jackets, football and apples. I love apples—baked apples, apple butter, apple pie, really apple anything. On a recent trip to visit the cabinet maker we made a stop at a local garden center and farm stand. They had the most unusual and interesting apples I had ever seen. They were Heritage apples. The names were just as intriguing as apples themselves—Wolf River, Hoover, Hudson and Sheep’s Nose. I had to buy a few of them to try. I also loaded up on a few of my favorite apples—Fuji and Honey Crisp and Granny Smith. I was told that the Wolf River variety make the most delicious apple sauce while the Granny Smith make a delectable apple pie…and who could resist an apple named Sheep’s Nose-not me! Take a road trip to a farm near you and pick a few apple varieties to try. Remember…An apple a day keeps the Doctor away!

I completely agree one of the best parts of Fall are apples. My daughter and I drove up to Sky Top orchards last weekend. I live in Greenville, South Carolina and have been making this trip since 1988. They are located a couple miles south of Flat Rock, NC. Every year they seem to add something new to their repertoire this year it was Turtle Apples. An apple dipped in melted caramel and then dipped in melted chocolate and then rolled in chopped pecans. I brought one home to share with my husband.
I also use apples to make apple crisp and add chopped walnuts. My husbands is a big fan.
Victoria, I will add this to my apple visits. My husband loves anything made from apples.
